FRENCH LANGUAGE CHAMPION CELEBRATED AT CPF NOVA SCOTIA CONFERENCE
CPF Nova Scotia recognizes Velma LeBlanc Dunn for her contribution to French Second Language Education
Halifax, Nova Scotia (October 8, 2019) – Canadian Parents for French, Nova Scotia held their annual conference on September 28. CPF Nova Scotia recognized the outstanding achievement of Velma LeBlanc Dunn, who was presented the 2019 Nova Scotia French Second Language Champion award.
Velma LeBlanc Dunn is a French Acadian Educator, originally from East Margaree, Cape Breton. She is proud of her French ancestry and feels privileged to have had a 35 year teaching career where she could share both her language and love of her culture. Having graduated from Margaree Forks District High, she pursued her studies at Nova Scotia Teachers College, graduating with majors in French and Math. Velma also pursued her Bachelor of Education and Master of Education at Mount Saint Vincent University.
Velma worked in various educational capacities over the span of her career; French was a consistent and dominant component throughout. From beginning as a circuit French teacher in three Queens County Schools to being French Coordinator for Chignecto-Central Regional School Board (CCRSB) for 10 years prior to her retirement in June 2018. Velma was also a French Specialist at the Elementary and Junior High levels, Teaching Principal, and French Consultant in CCRSB.
As a retired professional, Velma continues to be actively involved with the DELF examination of Grade 12 French Programs Students in Nova Scotia, by being a certified DELF Examiner and Corrector for the two provincial testing sessions (fall and spring).
The French Second Language Champion Award was established in 2016. Recipients to date have been Patricia Holland, founding Director of CPF Nova Scotia, Greta Murtagh, retired HRSB French consultant and Nancy Belliveau, Acadia University.
