CPF NOVA SCOTIA WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT

Delegates and special guests gathered for a day of discussion at the annual conference and AGM

Canadian Parents for French, Nova Scotia  held its 46th Conference and Annual General meeting on September 23, 2023, at the Delta Hotel by Marriott in Dartmouth. Board members, staff, delegates, special guests, and award recipients were gathered for a workshop, AGM and lunch together.

Bailey Ross was elected as the new President of Canadian Parents for French, Nova Scotia.  Bailey has been on the Board of Directors since 2017.  He finished his term as Vice President and stepped in as interim President in July 2023 when past President Kate Ashley joined the Canadian Parents for French National Board.

Bailey was an early French immersion student.   He is a recent B.Ed graduate from Acadia University and is now teaching at the CSAP.   He has also worked for Parks Canada and at Government House as a legislative page and tour guide, two organizations where French is an asset.

Bailey began volunteering in his teens.  Since university, Bailey has taken on leadership roles with the Francophone and Francophile communities. In 2019, Bailey was invited to attend the Officially 50! Bilingual Summit as a youth representative.  Bailey has also volunteered with the Conseil jeunesse provincial de la Nouvelle-Écosse and is presently the treasurer of the Société Nationale de l’Acadie.

Canadian Parent for French, Nova Scotia is also proud to have Salma Khattab elected as Vice President.  Salma joined the Board of Directors in 2021 as a youth representative.   She is a past provincial and national winner of the Concours d’art oratoire.  Her background as a late French immersion graduate has made her a well-rounded speaker and advocate for French second language education.   She is presently completing her undergraduate science degree and is continuing her chosen career path as a medical practitioner with the Canadian Forces.

Past President Kate Ashley presented the 2023 slate for the Board of Directors. Joining Bailey on the Board are returning directors Salma Khattab (Vice President) Maryse Truax (Treasurer), Guillaume Fleury (Secretary), and Luc Tardif. Canadian Parents for French, Nova Scotia is presently seeking a Youth Board member and two additional Board members for 2023-2024.

The conference theme was “Maximize Volunteer Impact”. Board, staff and delegates reviewed the present organizational structure and learnt more about new CPF teams for schools and communities.   Canadian Parents for French uses a volunteer management system, Better Impact to screen its volunteers and orientate them to participate in volunteer events.

At the end of the conference, delegates left feeling rejuvenated, excited, and motivated to continue the work they are doing with Canadian Parents for French.
