NOVA SCOTIA FRENCH SECOND LANGUAGE EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARDED TO KRYSTAL MUNRO

SSRCE intensive French teacher  named FSL Educator of the Year 2023

Halifax, Nova Scotia (October 20th, 2023) – Each year, Canadian Parents for French, Nova Scotia recognizes excellence in French Second Language teaching with its FSL Educator of the Year award.   Nominations are received from across the province from students, parents and colleagues with glowing testimonials to teachers who motivate their students to achieve their best and who make a significant contribution to their school and community.

This year, Mme. Krystal Munro from Hebbville Academy in the South Shore Regional Education Centre was the recipient. Mme Munro has been teaching for twenty-five years.  She is presently teaching grade 6 intensive French.

Mme. Munro holds a Bachelor of Arts from Acadia University, a Bilingual Certificate and Bachelor of Education from Université Sainte-Anne, as well as a master’s degree from Mount Saint Vincent. After completing the Immersion Program at Université Sainte-Anne she went on to take her B.Ed. in French. Attending Université Sainte-Anne and obtaining her bilingual certificate was a highlight of her post secondary education.

Mme. Munro always wanted to be a teacher but didn’t decide she wanted to be a French teacher until high school. Upon graduating from Kingswood University (1993), she became certified to teach in Christian schools. She taught French in Prince Edward Island and then in New Brunswick for six years, before moving to Nova Scotia. Mme. Munro began a family in this province and then continued her education at Acadia University in 2011 to become certified to teach in Nova Scotia. During her studies she was still motivated to teach in French.

Mme. Munro has been teaching on the South Shore for thirteen years. Prior to teaching in the SSRCE, she taught French immersion, intensive French and core French at a private Christian school, public schools, and French schools in other areas of Nova Scotia, Alberta and Nunavut.

As an anglophone, Mme. Munro can empathize with her students and the challenges they face learning a second language. At the same time, she understands how rewarding it is to learn another language and especially enjoys those “light bulb” moments.

Félicitations to Mme. Munro, we appreciate your hard work and inspiration to others!
